Distinguishing characteristics

Easily distinguished from the Greylag goose (A. anser) by a black-banded white head, white line down the neck and yellow beak as opposed to a prominent pink beak in the Greylag.

Winter distribution

Widespread winter visitor to the northern plains; locally also in southern India.
